THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF PIER B

Pier B is a state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that will be able to accommodate an additional 6 million passengers a year at Fiumicino airport, thanks to 22 new gates.

The area opened to traffic in 1991 and cloed in April 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which negatively impacted the levels of passenger traffic. The closure has allowed the renovation work to be carried out to the highest sustainable and innovative standards, with the aim, among others, of obtaining LEED Gold certification; increasing the visibility of passenger services; enlarging operating spaces and making them more flexible; increasing the minimum ceiling heights; and increasing the brightness of the rooms (natural light).

The redevelopment of Pier B follows the opening of Pier A last May and precedes the reopening of boarding area C before the summer, the renovation of Pier D, which will begin in the coming months, and will complete the reorganisation of the entire Terminal 1 boarding area with a total investment of more than €500 million.

All works were carried out by adopting the strictest environmental protocols without excavating or increasing the existing infrastructure by a single cubic metre. Thanks to these interventions, it was possible to adopt an energy model with lower consumption than before.

With the opening of Pier B, Aeroporti di Roma is contributing to Italy and Rome reaffirming its central role on the international scene. And it represents a further opportunity to relaunch the city in preparation for the Jubilee 2025 and Rome’s candidature for Expo 2030.
